This white paper explains the sensing hardware and software available to create a 3D solution, and which approach to use depending on application. The primary driver in selecting a solution is the nature of the object and the task to be performed. Variables that must be balanced in determining the elements of a 3D solution include the type of object to be sensed, transaction speed, field of View, and required resolution.
This paper explains in detail four elements of 3D solution. They include characteristics of the object, the sensor suite (cameras, lasers, structured light, time-of-flight sensors), software methods for vision guidance (position and pose), and types of part inspection.
Integration with the actuated machine, be it industrial robot or conveyance system, is not covered in this paper.
