Researchers from Stanford University are building an open-source camera to facilitate research in new digital photography techniques (e.g. focus, exposure, shutter speed, and flash), without being limited by manufacturer pre-installed software. The camera prototype is dubbed Frankencamera because of the parts that are cobbled together. According to the press release, there are plans to manufacture the prototypes in higher quantity, for less than $1,000 each.
